I Build Web Sites

Using WordPress, HTML, CSS, JS, PHP, & Frameworks

So... How did I get here

I Gained Invaluable Life Experience

And did everything I ever thought I wanted to do.

Life Experience is Important

When I graduated High School, it freaked me out to know that I could be a professional fill-in-the-blank at 22. Really? What would I know about anything at the age of 22? What would I know about life, or the real world, or myself? So I did whatever my little heart desired. I worked any job that I thought I might like: waitress, retail, customer service, even telemarketing. I traveled to places I wanted to see: Joshua Tree National Park, Devils Tower, the Grand Canyon, and Roswell, NM. I even stood on the corner in Winslow, AZ, and it was a fine sight to see.

I know what you’re thinking: “So what? What does any of this have to do with designing web sites?”.

Well, I will tell you. My life experiences have given me an inside look at how things work in a variety of fields. I can make better choices when it comes to color, design, and even proper image use based on my knowledge and experience in these fields.

Things I've Done:

  • Lived in California
  • Visited every state west of the Mississippi (except HI & AK)
  • Became an airbrush artist
  • Decaled Harley parts
  • Sold a painting
  • Worked in an art gallery
  • Rebuilt a ’67 ford Mustang

I Learned to Code

And I enrolled at Waukesha County Technical College.

Gamer Inside

I’ve always, always, asked “Why?”. So much so that my own mother called me bug. I had to question everything, had to understand how everything worked, and I wouldn’t just take any answer – I had to find out for myself. This is one of those things that has not changed. But, when I first picked up my 360, I accepted it at face value. It was something that provided vicarious experiences in worlds that we could only imagine existed.

Of course, I wanted to know everything. How the games worked, how the images moved, how, when I pushed a button, I could rule the world or destroy it however I saw fit. I began teaching myself Java. There were so many layers to programming that I decided school was probably going to be the best way to go. A structured environment that would provide me with relevant knowledge.

Enter Waukesha County Technical College.

Things I've Questioned:

  • Logic behind Soduko
  • Who is Rasputin?
    Thank you Destiny
  • Oil over acrylic?
  • Chinese Democracy
    Really? Gn’R?
  • Who shot first?
    Han or Greedo

And Then...

I Got a Degree

In Web & Digital Media Design From WCTC in Pewaukee, WI

To Web Development and Beyond

The one thing that I took out of my entire experience at WCTC was confidence. While I’ve always been a “Why?” person, I’ve never been one to have the confidence to have an answer. The final year wasn’t about proving I could, they gave me the knowledge I needed, it was about why.

Why I chose X framework. Why I chose X color. Why this works, and why this other thing doesn’t. It’s a great feeling when you are presented with a question and you can say “Here is my answer, and here is why”. There might be 18 different ways to do any one thing, know why one way is better, but be open to the other 17.

Things I've Learned:

  • Zurb Foundation
  • CodeIgniter
  • JQuery UI/Mobile
  • WordPress
  • Adobe CC

I Will Always Be An Artist

The medium may not always be the same

Forever Changing

One of the reasons why I love the web is because it is always changing. Something new is created everyday, and that something has a chance of catching on. With so many possible somethings, how does one stay in the know? How does one keep all those technologies strait: by reading blogs, attending Meetups, and knowing the basics. You can dive in head first even without explicit knowledge of X technology, as long as you understand how the base language works, and how to put it to use.

To-do List:

  • Angular
  • Static Web Generators
  • React JS
  • D3
  • Node JS
  • .Net
